Aimed at children pre-school age through elementary, this unique and customized book about your child will help create a culture in their classroom that embraces diversity and inclusion. Most young children do not know how to react to many of the behaviors exhibited by our autistic kids. But kids that age are generally quite pure, kind, gentle, and impressionable. So just like we teach them the "appropriate way" to do everything else, we need to teach them how to respond to kids with autism. Unfortunately, teachers have their hands tied; they are not able to talk to the class specifically about your child's diagnosis or behaviors. But luckily schools still encourage parents to come into the classroom and read stories! This is your chance to get in there ~ to teach the basics about autism, talk about your child's strengths and unique qualities, not just how he's different. This is your way to give some practical advice that will not only foster understanding, acceptance, compassion, and joy in the classroom... but it can set the stage for wonderful, and necessary, peer experiences for your child.

"Friendships are a most essential part of the human experience. Fitting in and making friends can be a daunting experience for anyone with social challenges, and particularly for children on the autism spectrum. Although most children on the autism spectrum are no different than typically developing children in their desire for friendships, they often do not possess natural abilities to easily make friends on their own. The peer culture plays a decisive role in determining whether or not a child is included. Without any form of preparation, most typical children are unlikely to react positively to a child who behaves in unexpected ways. The unusual manner in which many children with autism relate to people and objects often sets them apart from their peer group. Consequently, they often fall victim to teasing and rejection, or are simply overlooked and neglected. Without a system of support, these children are especially vulneralble to being excluded, and thus deprived of opportunities to learn how to socialize and make friends."
